The ancient sound of jouhikko meets the music of Renaissance palaces.

Ilkka Heinonen is filtering the music of old jouhikko (Finnish/Karelian/Estonian bowed lyre) masters from Karelia through medieval chants, Russian old believers’ songs, and European secular dances of Renaissance – presenting an unprecedented sound spectrum of the jouhikko.

Ilkka Heinonen is a Helsinki based musician and composer, one of the pioneers of jouhikko. Heinonen is specialized in North European traditional music cultures but has also been working actively in early music and contemporary music scenes.

He is also a member of several musical groups. The experimental sound of Ilkka Heinonen Trio has been influenced by as well as European jazz and Renaissance music. Heinonen plays jouhikko and violone in the progressive early music group Ensemble Gamut, a jouhikko quartet Jouhiorkesteri and in the ensemble of Sámi singer Ánnámáret.

Ilkka Heinonen is preparing his artistic doctoral degree "Folk musicians in the palaces - the development of musician expression through historical conventions" in Sibelius Academy, the University of the Arts, Helsinki.
