Spring ETHNO 2012

21-24 March, 2012

The camp is meant for everyone aged 14-35 who is interested in playing a musical instrument and who wishes to learn more about Estonian and Scottish traditional music and get to know about different styles of traditional music.

The main supervisors are Kate Young, Merike Paberits and Jaan Jaago.

Kate Young is a violinist, singer and composer from Scotland who recently graduated from the traditional music department of Newcastle University. She composes music ranging from traditional to instrumental songs. Kate creates original Scottish and Irish traditional music with her unique way of singing. She will introduce the traditional and instrumental music of her country in the workshop.

Merike Paberits found traditional music five years ago at the Estonian ETHNO camp. She is originally from Pärnumaa, Estonia and at the moment, she is studying transverse flute and Estonian bagpipe at the traditional music department of UT Viljandi Culture Academy (UT VCA). Merike also features in the bands VEM and Nikns Suns.

Jaan Jaago also studies at the traditional music department of UT VCA, but he plays the guitar. In addition to that, he plays in the bands Gjangsta, Viljandi Guitar Trio and Viljandi Gypsy Jazz Colletive.

Kate Young's workshop is divided into two parts. In the first part, the participants practice the violin together and take a look at how to add your own voice to the instrument. In the second part, she teaches the participants how to play Scottish songs on other instruments and focuses on the unique aspects of these songs.

Merike and Jaan introduce old Jew's Harp songs from different parts of Estonia in their workshop. However, this does not mean that only Jew's Harp players would be welcome in their workshop. In the contrary, the aim of the teachers is to try to adapt the old Jew's Harp techniques to other instruments - how to express the secrets hidden in the mouth on your instrument and how to support the Jew's Harp with other instruments. Old songs and new tricks!

The process of learing is carried out through workshops where the participants learn the songs and techniques from the supervisors by listening and repeating. The participants are divided into two groups for the instrument workshops and joint workshops are held in the evenings. As one of the supervisors teaches Scottish traditional music, the participants have a wonderful opportunity to compare two different music cultures and gain a fresh perspective on the techniques used in Estonian traditional music. The camp ends with a concert during the Traditional Music Center birthday celebrations.
