The growth in the economic exchange between rural and urban areas had an increasing influence also on people's garments, and under the growing impact of urban fashions the peasants dress altered rapidly in the first part of the century. Skirts with vertical stripes, pottmüts (its variant kabimüts in West Estonia) spread further. The cut of short coats and waistcoats changed, and spread also among men (vatid and vestid). The most popular colour was now indigo.
