A new type of voluminous skirts gathered to a waistband spread from the north downwards, and by the middle of the century the single colour of the fabric was replaced by bright stripes, which gradually became prevalent in most parts of Estonia. The women around Tallinn started preferring high bolstered caps of silk covering (pottmüts) that spread all around the north. They decorated their blouses with colourful needlework, mostly flowers. On the islands spread jackets (kampsun) and waistcoats (liistik, on Saaremaa abu).
The south remained more conservative, allowing changes mainly in ornamentation where earlier white or coloured yarn was replaced by a brighter red.
The significance of purchased goods increased, including such items as jewellery, kerchiefs, buttons that were bought either over the counter or from peddlers.
