13th to 17th centuries

The festive garments were basically similar to the earlier period; the main developments occurred in decorations (bronze was replaced with tin) and jewellery (larger brooches sõlg, strings of glass or silver beads (paatrid and krõllid). Knitting of wool was introduced.

Major changes occurred from the 17th century onwards, particularly among peasants of North Estonia. Women started to wear a short linen blouse käised, the skirt was sewn together with a waistband (ümbrik). Married women gradually preferred coif (tanu) to headcloth.

Since the 17th century onwards we have also more information on men's vestige. Earlier long pants were replaced by breeches, first in North Estonia. The previous tunics were changed to longcoats. On festive occasion men wore tall hats.

Common footwear were soft-sole leather shoes pastlad, in summer time people wore bark shoes viisud to work. First sturdy leather shoes (kingad) were introduced on the island Saaremaa in the 17th c.
