Kannel
player Tuule Kann and guitarist Jaak Sooäär have played together for nine years already in the ensemble Eesti
Keeled; during this time they have had several performance options as a chamber
duo. It was in summer 2006 that Tuule and Jaak decided to focus more intensely
on their duo format, and have by now performed at well-known festivals in
Norway (Vossa Jazz) and Greece (Athens European Jazz Festival) as well as at
our Estonian Jazzkaar Festival and at Christmas Jazz. TUTL, a label on Faeroe
Islands released the first album of the duo “Õhtu ilu” (The beauty
of an evening) at the end of 2007. The album has received positive acclaim both
home and abroad.
The music produced by the duo can be described by mostly calm, sometimes minimalist
harmony with prevailing folk and jazz music elements. The smooth musical
dialogue between their kannel and guitar is equal – neither side is
overwhelming. Their repertoire comprises mostly original pieces, added to it
are some folk music arrangements that reflect nature and being in harmony with
it.
Reviews on “Õhtu ilu“:
“These 15 pieces could be a signpost for a dignified way for all the involved jazz and traditional musicians: the true believers, non-believers and new makers. “ (Ants Johanson, Metroo)
“Presented with kannel and Jews harp, guitar and electricity; with subtlety, lightness and discretion – very charming. Phenomenal singing and playing – together and before others – providing the fellow musician with plenty of breathing and moving space; obtaining it without excess, respecting the silence and making the pauses meaningful.“ (Tiit Kusnets, Postimees 15.03.08)
