What is a Dance House?

Dance House is a place where you can party and dance to the music played by jolly instrument players. The dances vary from traditional Estonian dances to foreign ones. For example, the rheinländer, waltz, polka and labajalavalss (Estonian folk waltz) are definitely included in the program along with other well-known and forgotten dances. Everybody is welcome regardless of their age and their level of dance skills, provided they want to dance or just listen, watch and spend time in a pleasant company. The party is always preceded by a workshop where everyone can learn the dances which are in the party programme.
The tradition of Dance Houses was born in Hungary in the beginning of the 1970s, where as a way of balancing stage dancing and the communist pressure, people felt the need preserve their traditional culture. Since then, the dance house movement has become more and more popular and spread into other countries. Today, similar party evenings are held in Sweden, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, France and also Estonia. Traditional music is related to dancing as most of the instrumental music in that genre is dance music. The main aim of traditional music is to accompany people's dancing and for that, you need both musicians and dancers. The tie between the musician and the dancer is very important - the dancer dances to the music and the musician arranges his music according to the dancers. Communication between the two sides preserves and recreates the characteristic feature of traditional music and dance - their improvisational nature.
