Arrotajad
Estonia
For gourmands
The members of the ensemble have known each other for a few decades since they met at Tallinn Music Academy while studying choir conducting. Ene and Anneli also studied together at Sibelius Academy. Celia and Anneli have worked together at Viljandi Culture Academy in the field of folk music with Ene being the Head of Church and Choir Music Chair. However, Celia is now in Võru, Ene in Tallinn and Anneli in Viljandi.
Arrotajad have been to Viljandi Festival several times before (2001, 2002, 2004, 2006) performing organ arrangements by Edgar Arro. Ene plays a selection of them on the organ and Anneli and Celia introduce their originals. Edgar Arro has compiled 57 folk tune arrangements into six booklets (1968-1978). Arro aimed at showing folk music as natural basis of our music, and the vitality of folk tunes in contemporary world. The composer has consciously and carefully avoided any kind of alteration of the folk tunes from his side. He has said, ”Folk tunes have been for me like something sacred that I have wanted to preserve intact, in their original beauty, only adding corresponding background to them with harmonic and polyphonic means.”
In addition Arrotajad have performed choral arrangements both as folk versions and from the book of chorals in use today. This summer their program offers long folk songs that are commented on by the organ in the arrangements composed by Arro. Photos by Päivi Lassila.
