Emma Reid and Tuulikki Bartosik =
Something for real folk music gourmands!!! The Festival presents: two master musicians who have played together since the year 2000. They take deepest pleasure in the musical heritage of a violinist Gössa Anders Andersson (1878-1963) from Orsa region in Sweden. Both members of the duo have delved deeply into his playing style, repertoire and performance style; have listened to archive recordings, and as a result of joint work they have found ways to provide interpretations close to the original Gössa Anders music. In the course of their research Tuulikki and Emma noticed big differences between the interpretations of Orsa tunes in the earlier times and nowadays, and thus the interest arose to go back to the mystical Gössa playing style. The latter can be characterized best by its quarter tones, complicated rhythms, extraordinary tonality, modality, specified presentation and skillful playing technique. Musical arrangements to be performed are also based on traditional modal playing style. Composing the arrangements Emma and Tuulikki have found a lot of inspiration by listening to two closest fellow musicians of Gössa Anders, namely, Gössa Anna (1906-1999) and Jämt Olle (1831-1922), and following their notations. As for Tuulikki, getting deeply involved in Orsa music has been somewhat of a challenge to look for possibilities to interpret originally violin technique on her free bass accordion. Listening to Tuulikki playing you will get an answer to the question, whether it is possible to play quarter tones on a tempered accordion.
Tuulikki and Emma have performed together, taught and delivered lectures in Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Great Britain. Both members of the duo enjoy playing dance music because the latter allows the most space for spontaneity and expressiveness of the extraordinary Gössa rhythms. In addition to Orsa tunes Tuulikki and Emma also like to play dance music from Västerdalarna and Älvdalen, original compositions as well. Their debut album “Gubbdrag-Truculent ladies” was released on April 1st and is one in Sibelius Academy folk music album series. At the Festival you can also listen to Tuulikki playing with Jullundur feat. Viru Mehed.
